RECOGNISING THE IMPORTANCE OF REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE,
OUR STUDENTS REGULARLY ENJOY INPUT FROM REPRESENTATIVES
OF ORGANISATIONS ACROSS A NUMBER OF SECTORS AS PART
OF THEIR STUDIES.
Serial entrepreneur and one of the UK’s
most knowledgeable business visionaries Chris Gorman
OBE (pictured), who is an Honorary Professor of
the University, commenced a free seminar series
for students and staff in 2004, giving participants
an insight into how to get ahead in the competitive
world of commerce. Gorman was co-founder of DX
Communications, a company that grew from a turnover
of£
100,000 to £70 million in four years. He went on
to found Reality, one of the first Internet companies.
Most recently Gorman starred as a business mentor
to budding entrepreneurs on the Channel 4 programme, ‘Make Me a Million’.
Ongoing activity with students has included business
plan development workshops and most recently mentoring
on student project work. Gorman is helping four
Business School Honours year students with their
module in Corporate Entrepreneurship. As part
of the module, the students are having the chance to
work in collaboration with Gorman to research
what motivates entrepreneurs to start up their
business and why, when they become successful,
they keep on working.
As part of the research, Chris has arranged for the
students to meet and interview six leading entrepreneurs:
Anne Rushforth of Scotnursing; John Anderson,
Chief Executive of the Entrepreneurial Exchange;
John McGlynn of Airlink Group; Chris van der Kuyl
of the Tayforth roup; Jim McColl of Clyde Blowers;
and Tom Hunter of Westcoast Capital.
