SCOTLAND’S car park king, John McGlynn, is building up
a warchest of more than £20m to look at opportunties south
of the border. He is also in discussions about a future AIM listing
for the business.
McGlynn set up his first car park near Glasgow airport in 1994.
Since then he has built the Airlink Group, based in Paisley,
into Scotland’s largest independent long-stay car park
group.
At this time of year, Airlink’s airport parking is brimming
with holidaymakers’ cars, each paying £25 a week
per space. Airlink has 5,000 spaces in its car parks. McGlynn,
who is chairman and owns the majority of the business, has reinvested
most of the cash into buying land around the airport.
“ I’ve now got my eyes set on moving into England.
There are a lot of opportunities, including joint ventures, and
we now have the firepower to make a significant move,” said
McGlynn.
“ While I started out in long-stay car parking I have
a number of other business interests, with property development
now 40% of the group total. We recently moved into document storage
in Renfrewshire. I still believe there are exciting development
possibilites in Paisley,” he said.
“ I’ve built up assets of £20m over the past
10 years and I’ve an ambition to create a £100m company
by the time I’m 40.”
